Last night as we were getting ready to head down to the beach for the sunset, I began to imagine what it would be like to have dad back for just one more sunset.

He loved the sunsets.

I thought, what if we could stand on the footbridge one more time with him and watch as another “day in paradise” (as he would say) came to its glorious conclusion. I imagined us all – clambering just to be near him one last time. In my imagination, when the last bit of sun was swallowed up by the ocean, dad would vanish again.

What we wouldn’t give to have one more “last time.”

The thing about last times is that people seldom know they are having them. We often take them for granted, arrogantly assuming we are entitled to many more – or perhaps not giving it much thought at all.

I know, it’s super annoying when people say, “Enjoy every moment – it goes by so fast!” Exhausted parents are often cautioned of this by well meaning elders, as they wander zombielike through the grocery story, shirt caked in spit up, screaming toddler in tow.

I’m not going to say that to you. Life is a freaking roller coaster sometimes. Sometimes it is chaos. Sometimes it is just really hard, and it’s all you can do to get through the day.

One simply cannot enjoy every moment. Just stop saying that, people, please.

Instead, what I would like to say is this – there are moments and experiences in life in which you are able to recognize in that very moment

THIS, this is a beautiful moment.

This is a moment I always want to remember.

This is the moment that someday, I’ll be willing to trade anything to have back.

Savor those, you guys.
